Bronze Relief Sculpture

The craft of bronze relief sculpture exists in perpetuity as a method of collaboratively shaping bronze into raised designs that combine depth and texture to define stories. These bronze relief sculptures can be made using a self-contained process of lost-wax casting or through a process of direct metalworking.

Each piece made in bronze encompasses the artisan’s hand and breathes uniqueness. Bronze is also highly durable with its resistance to wear, making it suitable for usage in high-traffic areas where it can continuously improve through natural patination, acquiring a richer character over time.

Bronze relief sculpture has always existed as a timeless and respected art form. Ancient bronze relief came from the grand monuments of early civilzations (and often are at greater scale) to bronze plaques in personal, custom, art of today. Like we’ve seen in ancient civilizations, bronze relief sculpture captivates as strong, detailed, longstanding, and universal.

What Is Bronze Relief Sculpture

Bronze relief sculpture is an ancient, classical, and durable art form that has survived the test of time. There bronze relief sculptures in the great monuments of antiquity, and there are bronze relief sculptures found surging through contemporary custom artwork. Bronze relief is chosen due to its durability, ability to highly render detail, and everlasting aesthetics.

Relief work, bronze, and sculptures date as far back as thousands of years ago from many of the major cultures of antiquity: Mesopotamian, Egyptian, and Greek. They adorn temples, palaces, and other public squares, often depicting religious events, historic dates, and stories of mythology.

While relief sculpture exists from many materials throughout time, the true recognized value of bronze, is the inclusion of many different qualities, including the aspect of strength and malleability. Relief sculpture has used stone and wood, but bronze was unique from the other materials, allowing it to be cast from many finely detailed details, including textures, expressions, and fine patterns.

The Process of Creating a Bronze Relief Sculpture

Sculpting a bronze relief can be an exacting process made up of many discrete steps that require skill, accuracy, and patience. The project begins with the conceptualization stage, in which the artist’s design is worked up into sketches or small-scale models. This very important phase helps determine how the composition is structured.

The next step is the creation of the mold, where the model is used to create a negative impression of it, usually in silicone or plaster. This mold is then used to model a wax version of the original model, and the wax is coated with a ceramic shell to complete the loss-wax casting process. This is where the simple process of pouring molten bronze into the drier ceramic mold completely replaces the wax and takes its form.

The next step is taking off the ceramic shell. After the shell has cooled, it will be taken off by hand to expose the raw bronze casting. Finally, cleaning, welding, and chasing are done before the sculptor can begin working on the patinas and polishing. Patinas are chemicals used to achieve desired coloring and finishing effects on bronze.

Customized Bronze Relief Sculpture

When commissioning a custom bronze relief sculpture, clients are allowed to develop custom work to their specifications and see their artistic vision become a reality. A custom bronze sculpture can serve to recognize and record a milestone event, memorialize a human being. In a custom bronze relief sculpture, everything can be customized from the overall concept to the finish.

Commemoration in its various forms is by far the most prolific type of custom bronze relief sculpture. A bronze sculpture of a portrait, a family crest or bronze plaque is a lasting memory for a person, a historic event or an achievement. Unlike an ephemeral or regurgitated niche, a custom bronze relief sculpture is a lasting testament to a person, their accomplishments and legacy.

Custom bronze relief sculptures require a collaboration effort on behalf of both. The bronzecaster discusses the work holistically, communicating with the client in a similar way as a wife talks to her husband. Each component of the sculpture from the first sketch to patination is discussed, sketched and defined to meet the expectations of the client.
