We chose fiberglass so we could achieve a lot of detail without a lot of weight. Fiberglass has an excellent strength to weight ratio and allowed us to produce a durable sculpture without compromising the details of our sculpture design. Our design references were taken directly from CGI and practical suit references provided by Marvel.

Design & Construction

The design of the War Machine sculpture had to prioritize overall screen accuracy, replicating every mechanical detail in the suit including the layered armor plating, the weaponized components that enhance the suit’s offense, and the hydraulic-like moving parts that replicate the suit’s versatility.

Fiberglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) allows for a durable yet light piece. Unlike more traditional material like metal, FRP helps achieve dynamic posing while being structurally stable. There are internal frame components (often aluminum or steel) that provide rigidity where needed.

The painting is done using clean, staged layers and includes the base metallic coat, a weather worn affect, and tactical markings. We use airbrushing methods to show multiple uses, take-off scorch marks, and carbon scoring to give it a battle-worn feel. Finally we apply clear coating to endeavor against UV rays for long-term finish.

Scale & Proportions

The most common version of this sculpture is at a 1:1 scale, 6.5-ft tall-7-ft tall to match the actor’s size on screen. This custom size allows for the sculpture to have a powerful presence that is suitable for public displays or promotional events.

Smaller scale versions, 1:4 or 1:6 scale are designed for collectors or spaces without the ability to display larger pieces. Each of these pieces maintains the same critical details. Some of these models even have interchangeable parts, in special editions.
