Backlit onyx counters represent a premium surfacing option employing natural onyx stone and proprietary lighting systems. Similar to traditional solid-surface counters, the value in backlit onyx counters comes from the combination of the opacity of the stone and the deliberate illumination—considered a desirable application in commercial spaces where a clean aesthetic and soft light are goals. This material is based on a type of onyx, a mineral made of calcite. Its defining feature is its natural translucency, meaning that light can pass through the stone. This is completely unlike opaque surfaces such as granite or quartz. The visual effect is based on the slab’s natural characteristics: some slabs produce a uniform, milky glow while others exhibit dramatic, organic veining that comes to life as an active design when illuminated from behind.
