In the contemporary youth consumption scene, skateboarding and surfing cultures become a lifestyle that combines personal expression and social attributes. The creative surf and skate store introduced in this article focuses on immersive experiences of street culture as its core. Through the design of the space, it deeply integrates trendy symbols, art installations, and retail functions. It has created a professional yet vibrant youth culture landmark.

Design Style

Retro elements: The nostalgic signboards of VIDEO neon lights, and the blue trash can-shaped installations, all pay tribute to the 90s subculture scene. They evoke the youthful memories of the target audience.

Future feeling: Matte-textured metal pipelines, gradient neon lights, and white cabin structures. Together they create a cyberpunk-style space atmosphere.

IP integration: The bean-shaped cartoon sculptures serve as the visual centerpiece, with their cute appearance softening the tough edge of street culture. This enables the professional skate shop to also become a popular spot for collecting trendy toys, thereby expanding the customer base.

Wall Cabinet

Skateboard wall: This is the core visual focal point of the store. It uses a light wood base and modular shelves. The skateboard surfaces display in a staggered matrix pattern. Each skateboard is both a product and a decorative piece. The color collisions on the board surface create a dynamic visual effect, enhancing the street art atmosphere. The top neon light strip combines the board surface lighting, making the display area a glowing visual center at night, thereby increasing the attractiveness of the window display.

Book display cabinet: The grid cabinets in the Monster bookstore area feature a light purple backlit design. This complements the blue-purple tone of the main space. The spacing between the shelves is suitable for different-sized publications such as comics and trend magazines. It serves both as a storage and display function. The glass cabinet doors are dust-proof while maintaining transparency. This allows customers to clearly view the covers and stimulate their desire to flip through the books.

Retail area: The design features open shelves, with a red back panel contrasting strongly with the white cabinets. It highlights small items such as collectibles and accessories. The layering partitions is flexiable in height to accommodate product updates in different seasons. It strikes a balance between aesthetics and functionality.

Lighting & Signage

The store uses a visual identity system by coordinating the design of the logo and the use of lighting to create a memorable image of the brand.

Logo: The primary visual logo uses neon tubes to form the letters. The letters are handwritten-like and have curved lines with relaxed tension, which are representative of street graffiti. When the theme is applied to different areas, the same neon material is used; however, the color and typeface are altered for each location to have continuity and add additional layers of meaning.

Lighting: The lighting consists of 3 types: base, accent, and atmosphere. The base lighting provides embedded lights in the area to provide an equal amount of light for all areas. Accent lighting uses track lighting to highlight the skateboards and sculptures. Atmosphere lighting is composed of purple and blue LED tape along the edges of the building to provide an outline of the shape of the building at night, creating a cybernetic-like feel at night.

Cartoon Sculptures

Goddess Liberty Bean: A mint green bean-shaped sculpture resembling the statue of Liberty has transformed into a trendy sensation. The sculpture has become the store’s signature piece, having a white concentric circle design on its base to further enhance its centralization effect.

Interactive sculpture group: Yellow and red Pac-Man sculptures are also installed with skateboard props. The sculptures occupy key movement areas within the space, such as stairways to facilitate motion through and enhance the ‘fun’ of the scene. Purple monsters create a sense of mystery in the corners.

Material and craftsmanship: The sculpture is constructed of fiberglass. This serves to soften the industrial feel of the space, making it feel more inviting.
